Long Covid's Impacts on Workers and Workers Comp

The persistence of long-term COVID-19 cases (Long Covid) could have significant ramifications for New York State companies, their employees, and workers' compensation plans. Employees diagnosed with Long Covid may experience ongoing health issues that can lead to prolonged absences from work, impacting productivity and workforce management.

As a result, companies may face higher workers' compensation claims, which can strain resources and increase costs. Additionally, the psychological and emotional toll on employees experiencing Long COVID can affect workplace morale and company culture.

In order to educate employees about the issue, the New York State Insurance Fund (NYSIF), the state’s largest, not-for-profit workers’ compensation insurer, recently released an educational pamphlet outlining the most commonly reported Long Covid symptoms, the number of people affected, and the consequences for the labor force and the economy.

“Long Covid and its effects impact workers, employers, and the economy," said NYSIF Executive Director and CEO Gaurav Vasisht. “NYSIF’s new publication will help businesses understand the risks posed by Long Covid to the workforce, how to mitigate those risks, and how to support those affected.”

In January 2023, NYSIF published a report, Shining a Light on Long Covid: An Analysis of Workers’ Compensation Data, presenting data from more than 3,100 established workers’ compensation claims. NYSIF found that nearly one-third of all claimants developed Long Covid, with approximately 18% of claimants being unable to return to work for more than one year. Workers over 60 years of age had the highest incidence of Long Covid and were less likely to return to work, NYSIF found.

Insurance Coverage Options

For employees suffering from Long Covid, various insurance coverage options may be available, including traditional workers' compensation benefits, which cover medical expenses and lost wages for work-related injuries or illnesses.

Employers should also be aware of disability insurance, which might provide supplemental income for employees who can work but are unable to perform their usual tasks due to ongoing symptoms. It is crucial for employers to maintain open communication with employees regarding their rights and options for support.

Furthermore, Long Covid cases could impact a company's New York State workers' comp experience modification (MOD) rating, which is calculated based on the company's history of claims. An increase in claims due to Long Covid could potentially raise the MOD rating, resulting in higher insurance premiums.

Employers should assess their claims and loss management strategies to mitigate such impacts.
